The 35mm and 45mm on a drawer slide is the height of the rail profile, not its length. A taller rail uses thicker steel, so it carries more weight and feels steadier at full extension. Length is a separate choice, made from the depth of the cabinet.
The main differences
| 35mm slide | 45mm slide | |
|---|---|---|
| Profile height | 35mm | 45mm |
| Rail thickness | 1.0 × 0.8 mm | 1.2 × 1.0 mm |
| Rated load | 15 kg | 25 kg |
| Lengths | 250–400mm | 250–500mm |
| Best for | Small, shallow drawers | Deep, heavily loaded drawers |
Both are soft-close, side-mount slides, so they install the same way. Only strength and available lengths differ.
When to use 35mm
- Dressing table, bedside and desk drawers.
- Cutlery drawers in a kitchen.
- Drawers with low sides, since the 35mm profile is shorter.
- Cabinets 400mm deep or less.
When to use 45mm
- Pot, pan and plate drawers. One stack of ceramic plates can pass 10 kg.
- Wardrobe and filing drawers.
- Drawers deeper than 400mm, since 35mm stops at 400mm.
- Drawers that are often pulled all the way out with weight at the front.
If in doubt, choose 45mm. The price difference is small next to rebuilding a drawer that sags or drags a year later.
Choosing the slide length
Measure the inside depth of the cabinet, from the front edge to the back panel. Pick the longest slide that is still shorter than that, leaving a little room at the back so the drawer does not hit it.
- Measure the inside depth. Example: 470mm.
- Pick the longest slide below it: here, 450mm.
- Build the drawer box the same length as the slide, 450mm.
Never buy a longer slide planning to cut it. The soft-close mechanism sits at the end of the rail.
Working out drawer width
Side-mount slides need a gap on each side of the drawer as wide as the rail. For this type that is usually about 12.5–13mm per side, so 25–26mm in total.
- Measure the inside width of the cabinet. Example: 500mm.
- Subtract two rail thicknesses: 500 − 25 = 475mm.
- That is the outside width of the drawer box.
Measure the actual slide with calipers before cutting panels. Being 1mm out is enough to make a drawer drag or wobble.
Common mistakes
- Copying the old drawer size without measuring the cabinet again.
- Side gaps too tight, so the drawer feels heavy and the bearings wear fast.
- Using 35mm for a pot drawer because it costs less.
- Mounting left and right rails at different heights, so soft-close never pulls the drawer fully shut.
